Rio, Nice, Barcelona? Nope! Marseille! This is where the city takes on a more playful, relaxing allure, where the seaside is less industrial, and nature, omnipresent! The Southern districts maintain that "Marseille way of life", that of beaches, seaside sheds, gorgeous bastides - and luxury residences! It is, after all, where Le Corbusier decided to build his utopia.

Boukobza's interpretation of Le Corbusier?

How does one respond to la Cité Radieuse? Architect Fernand Boukobza's solution was to borrow from the Corbusier's work in a clever reinterpretation. The sculptural emergency stairwell, the duplex apartments within, and, of course, the stilts, are the obvious homages to La Cité Radieuse. The thin, curved building is neither a slab, nor a tower. It deploys an architectural vocabulary borrowing from the Brazilian modernist movement of the 1960s: concrete, deep balconies, canvas sunshades - and the colour white, of course. Along with its prestigious neighbour and the adjoining Grand Pavois tower, it forms a sequence welcoming those driving into Marseille from Cassis or the Calanques. Here is Marseille's own modern architecture magnificent mile!
The building was classified Patrimoine du XXème Siècle (the French “20th Century Heritage” designation).
