CMA/CGM Tower

Zaha Hadid's Semaphore

This skyscraper is the tallest in the urban agglomeration. The tower is 145 meters high, which was determined by a political decision. Indeed, Marseille's mayor, Jean-Claude Gaudin, wanted the tower to be no higher than the base of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde which dominates the city at 154 metres. This curved metal arch appeared to soar towards the sky in between two motorways. The deconstructivist style of Zaha Hadid (1950-2016) is instantly recognizable, with its juxtaposition of rigid and curved lines. The numbers themselves are impressive: the building features a total 53,000 m2 of glazed surface, 65,000 m3 of concrete (for a weight of 168,000 tonnes). Its structure is composed of 1,172 concrete pillars emerging from the ground, and the construction necessitated 6,000 tonnes of steel and 100,000 m3 of groundwork. Every pillar has a different inclination, and the concrete was specifically formulated for the tower's structure, which must sustain unique constraints due to the building's design, and its seaside, windswept location. The first of a series of towers (La Marseillaise, H99) that heralds a new ambition for Marseille's skyline, this landmark is the symbol of a new era for the city, as it looks confidently towards the sea.
